In today’s mobile society people are often relocated to other states for job opportunities or life events but this can add another layer of complexity in divorce. In multistate divorce, it’s common that support issues fall under one jurisdiction while financial and property division fall under another.

When a spouse lives outside the state for more than half a year, all jurisdictional requirements of the state in questions become involved. Either spouse can file for divorce in their state, but all the rules are variable. When children are involved, there are specific regulations each state follows but in most cases the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act is enforced.
